Software Security Device

The SIMS Software Security Device (SSD) is required to run the SIMS application.

Parallel Port Software Security Device (SSD)

USB Software Security Device (SSD)

There are 3 types of SSD's.  Look at the label attached to the device to determine which one you have.

Standalone SSD attached to a local workstation (Sentinel Super Pro).

In addition to a SIMS label marked as "Standalone", the SSD will have the name "SENTINEL SuperPro" molded in the plastic.

If you have a parallel port SSD labeled "Standalone", simply attach it to your PC's parallel port.  If you have a printer attached, connect the Standalone SSD to your computer's port and then connect your printer to the SSD.

If you have a USB port SSD labeled "Standalone", simply attach it to your PC's USB port after you have installed the driver for the USB key.

This SSD can be used for a SIMS Standalone or a SIMS Client connection.

SIMS Lite SSD attached to a local workstation (Sentinel Super Pro).

In addition to a SIMS label marked as "SIMS Lite", the SSD will have the name "SENTINEL SuperPro" molded in the plastic.

If you have a parallel port SSD labeled "SIMS Lite", simply attach it to your PC's parallel port.  If you have a printer attached, connect the SIMS Lite SSD to your computer's port and then connect your printer to the SSD.

If you have a USB port SSD labeled "SIMS Lite", simply attach it to your PC's USB port after you have installed the driver for the USB key.

This SSD can be used for a SIMS Lite Standalone.

Client SSD attached to a server for multiple clients to use (NetSentinel Pro or Sentinel Super Pro).

In addition to a SIMS label marked as "Client", the SSD will have the name "NetSENTINELPro" or "SENTINEL SuperPro" molded in the plastic.  It's important you note which device you have and then proceed accordingly below

Sentinel Super Pro

If you have a parallel port SSD labeled "Client", simply attach it to your SIMS Server's parallel port.

If you have a USB port SSD labeled "Client", simply attach it to one of your SIMS Server's USB ports after you have installed the driver for the USB key.

A Client SSD has a fixed number licenses such as 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, etc.  These cannot be combined with other Client devices on the same server.  However a NetSentinelPro  can be used in conjunction with a the SENTINEL SuperPro.  The licenses for the SENTINEL SuperPro are used first, then the NetSentinelPro is used.

With a SENTINEL SuperPro, you can install the SIMS clients on as many machines as you need without need for a local SSD.  When a user logs into SIMS, it will first look for a local SSD, and if not found, it will search the Server for a SENTINEL SuperPro.  If found, the total number of licenses is decremented by one.  When a user logs out of SIMS and has used a SENTINEL SuperPro license, the total number of available licenses is incremented by one.  If not found or all licenses have been used by other clients, then it will search the network for a NetSentinelPro.

For example, you might have a 10 multi-user SIMS license.  You can setup a 10 user SENTINEL SuperPro on your server.  You might install the SIMS client on 30 PCs.  Of these 30, up to 10 can connect to the SIMS server at the same time.

The SENTINEL SuperPro for a server has to be attached to the server that will run SIMS.  It cannot be on a different PC.

The SENTINEL SuperPro for a server can also act as a 1-user standalone device.  This is so you can run the SIMS Standalone at the server if necessary for database maintenance.

NetSentinel Pro

If you have a parallel port NetSentinelPro, simply attach it to a PC that has a fixed IP address and is on all the time.  This is typically the SIMS Server machine or another server.

A NetSentinelPro has a fixed number licenses such as 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, etc.  Any combination of NetSentinels can be connected together to achieve the number of simultaneous users you can have for SIMS.

With a NetSentinelPro, you can install the SIMS clients on as many machines as you need without need for a local SSD.  When a user logs into SIMS, it will first look for a local SSD, then check for a SENTINEL SuperPro on the server, and if not found or all licenses have been used by other clients, then it will then search the network for a NetSentinelPro.  If found, the total number of licenses is decremented by one.  When a user logs out of SIMS and has used a NetSentinelPro license, the total number of available licenses is incremented by one.

For example, you might have a 10 multi-user SIMS license.  You can setup a 10 user NetSentinelPro on your server.  You might install the SIMS client on 30 PCs.  Of these 30, up to 10 can connect to the SIMS server at the same time.

If you are in a small workgroup, you may have a single user license.  In that case, you can setup a 1 user NetSentinelPro on a server.  You might install the SIMS Standalone on 2 different PCs.  One of these 2 PCs can use the standalone at a time.

You can also setup the SIMS.ini file to specify the location of the NetSentinelPro using the server's IP address.

If you are using a NetSENTINELPro then you need to setup and configure the SIMS INI on the client or standalone and setup a software program to run on the server.

Sentinel SuperProNet

If you have a USB port, simply attach it to a PC that has a fixed IP address and is on all the time.  This is typically the SIMS Server machine or another server.

A SuperProNet has a fixed number licenses such as 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, etc.  Any combination of SuperProNets (up to 10 keys using a USB hub) can be connected together to achieve the number of simultaneous users you can have for SIMS.

With a SuperProNet , you can install the SIMS clients on as many machines as you need without need for a local SSD.  When a user logs into SIMS, it will first look for a local SSD, then check for a SuperProNet if an address has been specified for it the local SIMS.ini file,  then check for a SENTINEL SuperPro on the server, and if not found or all licenses have been used by other clients, then it will then search the network for a NetSentinelPro.  If found, the total number of licenses is decremented by one.  When a user logs out of SIMS and has used a SuperProNet license, the total number of available licenses is incremented by one.

For example, you might have a 10 multi-user SIMS license.  You can setup a 10 user SuperProNet on your server.  You might install the SIMS client on 30 PCs.  Of these 30, up to 10 can connect to the SIMS server at the same time.

If you are in a small workgroup, you may have a single user license.  In that case, you can setup a 1 user SuperProNet on a server.  You might install the SIMS Standalone on 2 different PCs.  One of these 2 PCs can use the standalone at a time.

You must setup the SIMS.ini file to specify the location of the SuperProNet using the server's IP address.

If you are using a SuperProNet,  then you need to setup and configure the SIMS INI on the client or standalone and setup a software program to run on the server.
